That’s right, kids.

I’ve been unfaithful to one of my characters.

I know… oh, I know!  HOW SCANDALOUS!

I’m usually of such a high moral standard that such a thing is barely believable!

But sadly, it is true.

Ever since patch 4.0.1 launched, I’ve found myself in a similar situation as Dechion, who is not all that pleased with the changes to his hunters.  (And now a day after I wrote that line, Dechion is re-inspired.)  Either way, I am not all that pleased or comfortable with druid tanking right now…or as Dech/BBB have both noted, maybe I’m not willing to re-learn druid tanking.

But I have found my tanking “mistress”…

I’m helping Chawa’s priest hunt down the Abyssal Rune from regular ToC.  I decide to go as a tank in hopes of quick queue times.

But this is what I see:

These wait times are unheard of for tanks! WTF!

The things we do for our better halves, eh guys?  nowutimean?

** Edit – 25 minutes later:  After a disconnect, a requeue and maybe another 7 minutes, we got into a group.   The first thing that someone said, “How many of you are here for trinkets?”  Seems everyone but me was.  That said, fairly smooth run despite some bickering over someone wanting The Black Heart (before we even got through the first fight).  Chawa’s trinket dropped and she got it, though.  Hooray!

I have noticed that a lot of people seem increasingly disinclined to tank in a PuG.

I think our guild currently has two people willing to tank if the group doesn’t have at least three guildies in it. Even then, there is a strong preference for an all-guild run.

While I certainly understand the sentiment I no longer feel this way myself.

I am now perfectly happy to tank in a PuG even if no guild members are present.

Unless I am on my warrior.

I have been trying to pin down why I have this exception and I think that I have worked it out:

When you don’t have aggro you are basically an off-tank.

I can't remember why we were in Upper Blackrock Spire

I scoured my accumulated screenshots for a picture of one of my tanks with a nice pile of corpses and sadly that’s the best I found. I think it must have been a Jenkins run shortly after patch 3.0 hit.

I started off covering boss tanking partially because it was kindest to my beloved warrior, but after another stress-filled trip through heroic Halls of Reflection I thought it was time to dig into how most tanks actually spend their time.

My general feeling going into this was that warriors have less reliable group threat tools with paladins and death knights in particular able to put out a lot more area threat with less work.

Today I’m going to go over the tools the different tanks have for group threat and how well these actually work.

I currently have four level 80 toons with tanking specs and the gear to tank heroics or better. Consequently I’ve been thinking about the differences between the four tanking classes, and partially inspired by a BBB post thought I’d give my take on how they compare.

At first I thought I’d go into too much detail about the strengths and weaknesses of each one but I found it too easy to get into a rant about why warriors are hard to play and the other tanking classes are easy.

But really, I like all my tanks. Even the two who are poorly-disguised healers.

So instead, I looked at what they have to do while tanking a boss and see how they differ, both in terms of what they have to do and what they can do.
