So last night a few people in the guild were organizing a Heroic Halls of Reflection run to try to farm what is apparently the only decent healing offhand that doesn’t drop in a 25-person raid. We had tanking and healing covered so I switched to my warlock, who is my best-geared DPS toon.
Unfortunately my best-geared DPS toon is not geared enough to queue for heroic HoR. We swapped around and I ended up tanking on my DK with the healer switching to an off-spec and the tank switching to healing. A couple of issues but we got through and even got the off-hand to drop.
However, this got me thinking that maybe I’ve gone a bit too far with my prioritization of healing and tanking specs. Maybe I need to spend more time blowing things up again.
To illustrate, here are my best-geared class / spec combos:
- Druid — restoration
- Warrior — protection (times two)
- Druid — feral (bear)
- Paladin — holy
- Death Knight — blood tank
- Paladin — protection
- Hunter (neglected original main)
- Priest — disc
Now this wasn’t always the case. Prior to 3.3 my druid was resto / balance. I made the switch because I do most of my instance runs with the other-half’s resto shaman and so I end up tanking.
While I used to do this primarily on my warrior, my druid has been my raiding character for some time. By switching his off-spec I could keep our useful tank / healer pair going for dungeons while still gearing up my raid healer.
However, my druid can no longer get anything useful from heroics apart from Emblems of Frost (and the above offhand).
Additionally, having some healers able to swap over and do some decent DPS is certainly useful. We killed Deathbringer Saurfang for the first time last weekend. For that fight we had one healer switch to DPS, thinking that the healing would only get bad if we were losing the DPS race. We had two druids on healing because only the shaman had a DPS spec.
It was fine in this case, but I can see there being some fights where there are advantages to keeping other classes on healing.
Also last weekend, Toravon was kind enough to give me the T10 boomkin legs. With those legs, some junk in the bank, a surplus of Emblems of Triumph and decent overlap with restoration gear requirements, I think I can pull together a respectable balance set.
While I’ve enjoyed my recent time as a bear, it might be time to re-embrace my inner laser-chicken.
