Last weekend was full of lots of raiding. Some highs, some lows, some guildies, some puggers. The focus will be on the latter. It was interesting. Anyway, moving along…
Friday night, the guild started off with the weekly raid on Friday night, which was the first boss in ICC: Marrowgar. We have downed him before, so we went in there with a good bit of confidence – and rightfully so. Once he was downed, we decided to keep on trucking deeper into ICC. After a couple of wipes on bosses (and Gunship suicides), we managed to clear the first wing of ICC for the first time!* So, congratulations, Zug Initiative!!! 😀
But for this guy, there was more to be had…
Riding on my raiding highs from the previous night, I managed to get myself loaded into a 25-man ICC semi-PuG on my mage (I usually raid with the guild on my druid). I also managed to convince a guildie to join me. 🙂 Now, I usually shy away from PuGs that request GearScore checks, as it has no reflection of skill…but considering that we’re going into the latest content, then yes, it probably does hold some prevalence for picking people.
Anyway, we eventually get a group of people together. We all hop on Vent and start clearing trash. It was going fairly smoothly, minus a couple of casters not facing AWAY from the raid. Annoying, but nothing we couldn’t overcome. And everyone was churning out some decent numbers. We get to Marrowgar and everything went fairly well. People survived the bone storm, the bone spikes got knocked down quick enough, et cetera.
But I was still a little disappointed. Not with the resuts, but with myself. My average DPS from trash was about 6.5-7k (admittedly padded with some AoE). But on Marrowgar, it was less. That was easily accounted for with all the switching to the bone spikes, but why was the mage that was slightly above me in DPS for trash now considerably higher than me? Have a look:
But Chawa, who was watching, had guessed at what it could be. And after much nitpicking, yelling, and beating me up, I finally looked at the details of a few people’s damage output:
You see that?
When people say, “Range – target bone spikes,” well, I actually do it. Even if other people spend a lot less time at it than myself. And even if it means chisling away at my own DPS meters. Heck, I even made a simple macro: “/target bone spike”. I used that to make sure all the spikes were down before going back to hitting Marrogar (There are three spikes that pop up in 25-man, instead of just the one in 10-man).
I am still in complete shock that a warrior beat most other ranged in damage to spikes. And I should probably be more shocked that a hunter didn’t target a spike at all. But I’m not. Some people think the meters are the most important part of the game. But I digress.
Anyway, after that, we moved on, but we never managed to get past Lady Deathwhisper. It may have been because one of the tanks disconnecting or it may have been because our DPS’ previously demonstrated inability to switch targets. Or both. But that’s where ICC-25 ended for me.
But hey – I got to see and experience some things I hadn’t seen before. That, I can’t complain about! 😀
* – This accomplishment probably deserves a post of its own. But I’ll let someone more eloquent than I write it. Because I’m lazy awesome like that.
